Charles was the son of the late Virgil S. And Effie "Mae" (Spurlock) McGhee. Grandson of the late George and Evelyn (May) McGhee, Also Grandson of the late James and JoHanna (Nelson) Spurlock.
He was the last surviving child of Virgil and Mae McGhee. He was one of 11 children including sisters Mildred Fay McGhee, Donna Lucas and Ruby Lucas and brothers Clyde, Robert "Bob", Raymond, Joe, Fred, Frank and Clay McGhee.
Charles and Ruby were married on February 14,1941. Together they lived in Hurricane West Virginia.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his Sons Eddie Charles McGhee and Larry H. McGhee, as well as daughter Jerry Joy Clay.
He is survived by his children, Lana "June" Alford, Kathy Ann Griffith, Judith Carol Arbaugh-Watts, and Sandra "Kay" Cremeans. His Son Charles David Vannater. His Granddaughter whom he helped raise Michelle McGhee-Mullins. His Brother in-law Edward Hodge, Sisters in-law Inez Hodge-Allen, and twins Jean Hodge-Belleger and Joe-Ann Hodge-Hensley. And Sister in law Bessie (Wheeler) McGhee. And several Grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great granchildren.
He was a Amazing Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. He helped to raise many of his grandchildren and words cannot express the lessons he passed to us.
