Ruby was the Daughter of the late Virgil S. and Effie "Mae" (Spurlock) McGhee. Granddaughter of the late George and Evelyn (May) McGhee, Also Grandaughter of the late James and JoHanna (Nelson) Spurlock.

She was one of 11 Children including sisters Mildred Fay McGhee and Donna Lucas; and brothers, Virgil "Clay", Raymond, Billy "Joe", Robert, Clyde, Fred, Frank and Charles.
