Life-long Davenport resident and music teacher Carl Paarmann, succumbed to heart disease on December 7, 2007. Born to Hulda and William Paarmann on April 18, 1920, he grew up in a lively family of nine children.
Mr. Paarmann graduated from Davenport High School in 1938, already an accomplished bassoonist. He then completed his degree in music at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1942.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to Davenport to marry Edna Stoltenberg on February 22, 1944. They enjoyed four happy years in Colorado where Mr. Paarmann was principal bassoonist with the Denver Symphony.
Mr. Paarmann returned to Davenport in 1951 with a son and daughter; another son was born in 1956. He managed the record store at M.L. Parker and later opened Paarmann's Record Store.
Without doubt, the happiest years were those Mr. Paarmann was music director at the then new Assumption High School. From composing the school song to building the instrumental music program for the school, he was professionally fulfilled.
Seeking new challenges, Mr. Paarmann joined the public schools as orchestra director at Sudlow Junior High School and later West High School. The pinnacle of his career was as Coordinator of Instrumental Music. He retired in 1985.
His family was his greatest pride and joy. Mr. Paarmann is survived by three children, three grandchildren, a sister and a brother. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and six brothers and sisters.
Visitation is at 9 a.m., Tuesday, December 11,2007, at the Runge Mortuary with the service following at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the American Heart Association or Disabled American Veterans.
