Former Resident Of Watauga Dies
Tom F. Cook, of Whaley, N.C., died Friday February 26, at the Banner Elk Hospital after eight weeks of illness.
Mr. Cook was a son of Jacob and Martha Cook, and had 17 brothers and sisters: John D. Cook, Nicy Cook, Lizzie Cook, Rachel, Maryann, Henry, Susan, Nancy, Samuel, Larkin Joseph, William, Jacob, Rebecca, Jerrie, Abner. He was born on January 5, 1858, near Bethel. At the age of 21 he was married to Margaret Harmon. To this union were born 14 children. They lived in the Phillips Branch vicinity for a number of years, later moved to the Beech, near Whaley, where they lived until death separated them about 11 years ago. Mr. Cook professed faith in Christ at an early age and joined the Antioch Baptist Church, later moved his membership to the Beech Mountain Baptist Church, where he remained until death. Through his 85 years he gained many friends and was a great help in the Church and in the work of the Sunday School.
He is survived by three brothers and sisters: Jacob Cook of Kentucky, Jerry Cook, of Bethel, N.C.; Rebecca Tester of Sugar Grove, N.C.; nine sons and daughters: Dillard Cook of Montana; Alvie Cook of San Francisco; Conard and Lance Cook, Audie McGuire, Ruby Trivett, Mary Storie, Ninie Miller Wreath Jones, all of Whaley. There are 45 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday February 28. Rev. Joe Potter and Rev. Dayton Jones were in charge.
