He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on August 23, 1838 to Philip and Anna Maria Austerstuck Keiser. William was a skilled carpenter. He was in the Civil War and fought in the Gettysburg Campaign. After the war, in 1866, he, his son James, and his wife Sarah, came to Springfield, Illinois. He later had many more children.
