Retha Arlene Bailey Britt was born October 22, 1922 in Hamer, Dillon County, South Carolina the seventh of eight children of Walter Clemmon Bailey and Mattie Clyde Edna King Bailey. She married Anderson Walker Britt, and they became the parents of four daughters. They lived in Saint Pauls, Robeson County, North Carolina.

Retha passed away at age 98 on June 17, 2000 in Lumberton, Robeson County and is buried near her husband at Gardens of Faith Cemetery in Lumberton.
