Rosa Bell Oden was born March 5, 1930, to the late Johnnie and Luella Scurry Pinkney in Newberry, South Carolina. She was the eleventh child of twelve children. Although various spellings of her name may be found in different documents, she spelled her name Rosa Bell and used either Rose or Rosa with her friends and family.

She relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey from Washington, D.C. in the mid 60's. In Jersey City, she established a stable life for herself and her son Clifton. Rosa was called from labor to reward on Saturday, January 22, 1994.

Rosa was cherished by her grand and great-grandchildren...they were the light of her life. Rose left a legacy of goodwill, love for humanity, understanding, and strength to those who knew and loved her.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Clifton, two grand-daughters Keisha and Carla, a grandson Clifton, Jr., two great grand-daughters and two great-grandsons, four brothers, Colie Pinkney of Trenton, New Jersey, Emanuel Muhammad of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, and Alfred and William Pinkney of Washington, D.C.; four sisters Maryam Muhammad of Trenton, New Jersey, Benny Lee Murphy of Jersey City, New Jersey, Ethel Taylor and Nancy Yates of Washington, D.C.; two brothers-in-law Wilbert Murphy and David Sheppard; two sisters-in-law Trudy and Rosebud Pinkney, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, January 26, 1994, at 10 a.m. at Parker Funeral Home, 17 Clinton Avenue, Jersey City, officiated by Rev. Sammie Lee Hawkins, Jr.
