Lucinda Williams Sheppard, daughter of the late Johnnie and Luella Scurry Pinkney, was born May 22, 1910, in Newberry, South Carolina. She was baptized at the Little River Baptist Church in Silverstreet, South Carolina and attended the Dan Watkins High School in Newberry. Lucinda Married the late Claude Williams; from their union, a daughter, Alice, was born. The family moved to Washington, D.C. in the late 1930's and settled in the southwest section of the district.

In 1994, Lucinda joined Friendship Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., and became a dedicated member of the senior choir and an active contributor in several other church organizations including Sunday school, pastor aide, and the missionary club. She was also a member of the Spearman Family Reunion group and served as an important geographical and information link to families in other states. In her honor, the B.H. Whiting Scholarship Fund is established for deserving students of Friendship Baptist to attend college.

Employed by the federal government at the Architect of the Capitol, Lucinda retired after 20 years of service. She was affectionately known as "Cindy" by her friends and relatives.

Cindy was previously married to Claude Williams. She later married David Sheppard in July 1983; theirs was a brief and happy union. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She touched the lives of all who knew her and always had kind and positive words and encouragement for family and friend alike. We will always cherish her memory and thank God for allowing us to share her love and wisdom.

She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her beloved husband David Sheppard; one daughter Alice Yates; one grandson Quentin Yates, Jr.; five brothers John and Colie Pinkney of Trenton, New Jersey, Emanuel Muhammad of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, and Alfred and William Pinkney of Washington, D.C.; five sisters Maryam Muhammad of Trenton, New Jersey, Benny Lee Murphy and Rosabelle Oden of Jersey City, New Jersey, Ethel Taylor and Nancy Yates of Washington, D.C.; two aunts, Anna Washington of Newberry, South Carolina and Mary Lindsey of Brooklyn, New York; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Friday, May 15, 1987, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. William H. Montgomery and under the funeral directions of John T. Rhines Company Funeral Home.
