Luella Scurry Pinkney was born to Hampton (1862-1990) and Lucinda Spearman Scurry (1868-1919) in the year 1890. She was the third of nine children. Her brothers and sisters were Anna, Will, Hamp, Mary, Bessie, Benjamin, Levi, and John.

Luella married Johnnie Pinkney and from their union came twelve children including: William, Emanuel, Alfred, John, Daniel, Colie, Rosabelle, Mary, Ethel, Lucinda, Bennie, and Nancy.
