Johnnie Pinkney was born circa 1892 in Silverstreet, Newberry County, South Carolina. He married Luella Spearman Scurry and together they bore twelve children including William, Emanuel, Alfred, John, Daniel, Colie, Rosabelle, Mary, Ethel, Lucinda, Bennie, and Nancy.

Affectionately called Pop-Pop, Johnny migrated north to Trenton, New Jersey at the invitation of his family following the passing of his wife. Johnnie and his daughters Ethel, Rosa Belle, and Nancy moved to Trenton. Later Ethel, Rosa, and Nancy continued on to Washington, D.C. joining their sisters Bennie and Lucinda. Johnny stayed in Trenton and resided with his son Daniel. His son Emanuel operated a barber shop and his son Colie operated a watch repair shop on the 1st floor of their building. Johnnie had a sharecropping business at one time when he lived in Sliverstreet.

Johnnie passed away at the age of 62 on a Thursday, July 3, 1955. Services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at New Salem Baptist Church officiated by Rev. C J Carter with interment at Ewing Cemetery under the direction of S.J. Newsome. His spouse Luella Spearman Scurry Pinkney predeceased him and is interred at Little River Baptist Church Cemetery in Silverstreet, South Carolina.
