Miss Eakins
Miss Catherine "Katie" Eakins, 88, of the Warwick Hotel, Newport News, died Monday after a short illness.
Born in Raleigh, N.C., she was a Peninsula resident most of her life. She was the first graduate of the former St. Vincent de Paul High School, and a 1910 graduate of what is now Hampton Roads Business College.
She retired from the Civil Service as a secretary at the Naval Ordnance Depot, Portsmouth, after 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and the Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Monroe.
Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Marie Palombo of Newport News and Mrs. Cecilia Babb of Williamsburg.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight in Jennell Funeral Home.

Mass of the Resurrection for Miss Catherine "Katie" Eakins of Newport News, who died Monday, will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Rev. John J. Dorgan officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
