Nickname: "old John"

He was one of fourteen children born to Margaret Jane (Vallely) and James B. Rock, who were (married) immigrants from the townland of Cladybeg, County Armagh, Ireland to the U.S. in 1866, emigrating to Vermont. Two of his sisters died young: Ellen (1878-1880) and Sarah (1886-before 1900).

Husband of Sarah Genevieve (Randall). They married on Aug. 27, 1914 in Wheelock, Vermont. Seven children were born from this union: Charlotte Ethel (Rock) Brooks, Russell Edward Rock, Phyllis Julia (Rock) McKenney, twins John James Rock [aka "Jack" or "young John"] and Margaret Alice (Rock) Duval Mace, Cedric J. Rock, and Phillip Stephen Rock.

Note: John's wife Sarah, who died many years after him, is buried in Union Cemetery, Claremont, New Hampshire.
