While on the ocean enroute to America, he lost his hearing during an attack of sea-fever. He received his early education at the school for the deaf and dumb at Jacksonville, Illinois, where he learned the shoemaker’s trade.
He followed his trade of shoemaking for several years here at Brimfield. Later, he engaged in mining coal and gardening.
About twenty-five years ago, Mr. Heaton lost his sight. For the past seven months, he had been confined to the house and the last three months were spent in bed, since the death of his sister, Mrs. Hannah Kelley.
He passed away at the Chas. Kelley home, June 9 at 4:30 p.m., aged 79 years, 3 months and 27 days.
He had been a faithful son, a dependable workman and a kind and loving brother. He bore his many afflictions patiently throughout his life and has passed on to his heavenly reward. He put his trust firmly in God and his faith in the Christian way of living.
He leaves to mourn his loss one sister, Mrs. Nancy Heaton Kelley of Big Hollow, and one brother, John Heaton of Irwin, California, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as distant relatives.
The funeral service was conducted in the Union Church at Brimfield on Wednesday, June 11, by Rev. Herbert N. Blakeway. Interment was in the Brimfield Cemetery.
