Mrs. Hannah Heaton Kelley was born Lincolnshire, England, on April 13, 1853, the third oldest child of Ephraim and Alice Heaton. She came with her parents at about the age of 5 from England to Brimfield, Ill., and spent her entire lifetime here, being educated in the local public schools.
She was married to James E. Sherman at Brimfield on June 4, 1877, and to this happy union 2 children were born, 2 daughters, both of whom survive. Mr. Sherman was killed in the Chattsworth wreck on August 10, 1887. She was married to Charles Kelley on July 20, 1896.
Mrs. Kelley was a good wife and mother, a friendly neighbor, and a faithful Christian woman. She was only sick for a week and only confined to her bed for two days before her untimely death with pneumonia at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, March 9, 1930, being 76 years, 11 months and 17 days of age.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Charles Kelley, 2 brothers, Ephraim Heaton of Brimfield; and John Heaton of Irwin, California; and 1 sister, Mrs. Nancy Kelley of Peoria; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Nettie Sherman Murray of Peoria; and Mrs. Gertrude Sherman Hayden of Chillicothe, Ill., four grandchildren, Pearl Hartwell of Evanston, Ill., Tom, Robert and Mary Hayden of Chillicothe, Ill., and one great-grandchild, Thomas Hartwell of Evanston besides several nieces and nephews as well as many friends and neighbors.
Hannah Heaton was baptized the last of March 1871 into t he old Brimfield Baptist Church and transferred to the Congregational Church and later into the present Union Church. In recent years she has been unable to attend church but kept up her faith in God. For the past 14 years, her helpless older brother, Ephraim Heaton, has made his home with her, both of them being blind for the past 20 years. Her father had been a reader or preacher in the Quaker Church in England, though here he was a coal miner.
Funeral services were held in the Union Church Tuesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Herbert N. Blakeway, the interment in the Brimfield Cemetery.
