He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a helicopter mechanic during the Korean War. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard where he served as a medic in the 204th M.A.S.H. Unit until his retirement as a 1st Sergeant in 1988. He was employed with the Grandview Water Department in the maintenance department for thirty years. He was a lifetime member of the Prop Club and the Springfield Chapter of the Stroke Support Group.
James enjoyed water sports including boating and fishing. He liked to dance, especially the Polka, and enjoyed watching John Wayne movies. He could always be found working with cars or tinkering on a T.V. or lawnmower.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters: Barbara (Edward) Williams, Theresa "Chick" (Calvin) Robinson, Tina (Edward) Hickey, Edna Decker and Katherine (James) Hamilton and three brothers: John (Eilline) Bumpus, Robert (Helen) Bumpus and Ernest (Lela) Bumpus. He was also preceded in death by one Granddaughter; Amanda Sue O'Dell.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Bumpus of Springfield; one son: Macarius L. "Marc" (Michele) Bumpus of Springfield; four daughters: Theresa R. (Tom) Catalano of Springfield, Cheryl P. (Silas) Powell also of Springfield, Denise A. (Robert) Matthew of Williamsville and Felicia R. Canady of Riverton. Ten grandchildren: Marc T. Crawford, Jason R. Matthew, Melissa Bumpus, James M. Matthew, Jacob D. Foor, Megan Bumpus, Jasmine R. Bumpus, Jonathan T. Matthew, Jordan P. Bumpus and Melinda Burton; two great-grandchildren: Marc Crawford and Ella Burton and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral Ceremonies were held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, with CH-(COL) Dan Krumrei officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be performed.
