Esther McCallister, 77, of Nitro, went Home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 18, 2020. She was surrounded by her loving family when the Lord called her Home and though there was sorrow for her family to see her leave this earth, there was rejoicing in Heaven when she arrived and was re-united with loved ones who had gone on before. Esther was a special person who was always doing things for others and never wanted anything in return other than to know that what she was doing for others was pleasing to the Lord. She was a hard worker and did her best at whatever her job might be. She had worked as the housekeeper for Cooke Funeral Home for several years and became more like a family member than an employee. There was no task too small or too big for her to tackle. She loved to take care of people, whether it was cleaning their house and cooking for them. Esther was a born again Christian and was a faithful member of the West Virginia Home Mission in Nitro. Some of her happiest times were attending church with her mother, sister, husband, her great-grandkids, and other family members and her church family. Esther was preceded in death by her parents George Alton Douglas and Madgel Millie Fisher Douglas, her sisters Carolyn Jones, Virginia Shinn, her brothers George Douglas, William Douglas, and Clifford Douglas. Left behind to cherish her memory are her loving husband Donald Joe McCallister, daughters Lena McGuire of Poca, Patricia Stover of Nitro, step-daughters Melissa Parsons (Chett) of Alum Creek, Debbie Thomas (Steve) of Nitro, Donna Parsons (Mark) of Poca, step-son Donald Joe Weathersbee (Sherrie) of South Charleston, sister Ellen Coleman (James) of Lancaster, OH, and brothers Ralph Douglas of Nitro and Robert Douglas (Kathy) of Chesapeake. Esther was blessed with nine grandchildren Hanna Hammonds (Burton), Rebecca Dawson, Brandi Dawson, Amanda Lowdermilk, Abigail Hughes (Michael), Amanda Babbitt (Jordan), J C Thomas, Caleb Parsons (Christa) and Amilee Parsons, seven great-grandchildren Samatha Lowdermilk, Charlie Hammonds, Haleigh Dawson-Webb, Justin Dawson-Webb, Callie Racer-Lacy, Avery Boswell, and Claire Parsons. A celebration of Esther’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at the West Virginia Home Mission beginning at 11:00 AM with Pastor Joe Scarberry officiating. Burial will follow in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at Cooke Funeral Home, 2002 20th Street, Nitro and one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association. The family wishes to thank Rebecca Dawson for her loving care of Esther and Dunbar Medical Associates and Hospice for their care and compassion
