At one point Emmett, her husband, and Mary lived on a houseboat at a feed mill immediately East of Lisbon on the Allegheny river.

The Atwell's had a reputation of being divisive in church matters. Apparently they were involved in the division of several churches in the area.

She was a farmer's wife and mother to 5 boys and 4 girls. The farm was on Hummel Road between Windy Point and Murrenville in Pennsylvania.
