CUMBERLAND - Martha Jane "Tess" (Duckworth) Graves, 86, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019, at Western Maryland Health System Regional Medical Center.
Born on May 21, 1932, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Lawson and Carrie (Nichols) Duckworth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Leslie, Edison, Raymond, Wallace and Melvin Duckworth; sisters, Evelyn Maynard, Corinne Kyle, and Gertrude Morgan.
Tess was a graduate of Beall High School, where she was crowned May Queen in 1950. She was an active member of LaVale United Methodist Church and enjoyed Ladies' Circle and its fellowship. She liked bowling in the Hercules League, playing bridge, and was a former member of Epsilor Sigma Alpha sorority. She attended Catherman's Business School and was employed as a civil service agent by the Bureau of Naval Ordinance (Buord) as a secretary in the Navy Office at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory at Hercules, Inc.
Surviving are her husband, Donald E. Graves; sons, Donald E. Graves II and wife, Dianna, Waco, Texas, and Timothy D. Graves and wife, Stacy, Cumberland; daughter, Terri Graves Cordle and husband, Timothy, Williamsburg, Va.; seven grandchildren who all affectionately knew her as "Sweets," Anna Cordle-Harry and husband, Mitchell, Thomas Cordle, Paul Cordle, Bethany Graves, Cassie Graves, Nathaniel Graves, and Elizabeth Graves; two great grandchildren, Danielle Graves, and Caroline Graves and sister, Shirley Jones, Lewisburg, W.Va.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown, on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, at 4 p.m. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
