He was the son of John McGowen and Sallie (Greer) McGowen. His grandfather, William McGowen, was a Revolutionary War veteran from South Carolina and James himself fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War. His brother Robert went into the war with him, but perished in 1862.
He was the brother of Artimitia, Cynthia, Susan Jane McGowen Parham, Elizabeth Rachel McGowen Marion, Mary Ellen McGowen Williamson, Robert Searcy McGowen, Martha McGowen Myers and John H. McGowen II.
A slightly humorous quote that refers to James, is taken from 'THE GREER'S,' authored by Judge James Micajah Greer of Memphis, Tennessee and published in April 1905:
"The oldest son, James Greer McGowen was a gallant soldier in the confederate army, and came out shot to pieces, and a Captain."
(Fortunately, he came out alive, which is more than can be said for at least one brother and several in-laws!)
James married Mary Ellen Dean (AKA 'Cynthia' Dean) on February 20, 1867.
They were the parents of three children, Cynthia Ellen McGowen, (who died in infancy and is buried in Arkansas), Joseph Hardy McGowen and James Greer McGowen II .
James was my great-great grandfather.
