He was the oldest of three children and the only one to be born in Mississippi. His brother Joseph Hardy McGowen and sister Cynthia Ellen McGowen were both born in Arkansas, before the family returned to their home state. Sadly, little Cynthia perished in infancy and was buried in Arkansas.
James married Lucia Lamar Richmond on November 8, 1893. They had three children, James Greer McGowen, III, Hardy Richmond McGowen and Miriam (McGowen) George .
A career attorney, James practiced in Water Valley, Mississippi and later served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Mississippi and member of the Mississippi State Legislature.
He was an active layman with the Methodist Episcopal Church and a prominent member of the Freemasons, Valley City Lodge No. 402 in Water Valley.
His son Hardy followed him in his pursuit of the practice of law.
