Donald E. Sheaffer, 78, of the Kepple Hill area of Parks Township, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at 12:30 a.m., in his residence.

Born April 7, 1928, in South Bend Township, he was a son of the late Henry E. Sheaffer and Ida L. (Boyer) Sheaffer Riffer.

Prior to retirement in 1990, he was employed as a crane operator at the Bagdad plant of the West Leechburg Works of Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp., with 38 years of service.

A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Leechburg, the Retirees of the USWA in Leechburg and the Parks Township Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition to his children and grandchildren, his interests included woodworking, gardening and spectator sports, especially baseball.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, W. Louise (Clark) Sheaffer; two sons, Donald A. Sheaffer (Brentta), of West Leechburg, and Samuel D. Sheaffer (Amy), of Parks Township; four daughters, Mrs. David (Bonnie E.) Steffan and Darlene L. Schantz, both of Leechburg, Mrs. Anthony (Jamie I.) Sibik, of Delmont, and Mrs. Joel (Julie D.) Hansen, of Vandergrift; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Dewayne Sheaffer, of Bethel Township; and a sister, Ida Patterson, of Parks Township.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Clint Schantz Jr.; three brothers, Lisle, William and C. Edward Sheaffer; and five sisters, Virginia Christy, Glennie Mansfield, Mable Lukehart, Pearl Beck and Esther Glass.

Friends will be welcomed by his family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in CLAWSONS, Leechburg, and from 10 until 11 a.m. Wednesday, the time of funeral ceremonies, in First United Methodist Church with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Ronald W. Raptosh, officiating.

Interment with full military honors accorded by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
