Karen, the ninth of twelve children, graduated from Flathead High School with the class of 1963. On December 27, 1969 she was united in marriage to Richard Emerson in Eureka, Montana. Karen worked as an Administrative Assistant throughout her life, bringing zest and creativity to every position she held. In 2009 she retired and enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, gardening and working in her beautiful yard on the west side of Kalispell. Having been raised in Montana, Karen had an appreciation for wildlife and loved long rides into the backcountry. As a Tribal Elder of the Little Shell Tribe of Montana, Karen had a passion for Montana history and Native American culture, and loved the Metis Celebration and Pow Wow in Lewistown, Montana. Karen was well known for her sense of humor and ability to light up a room. Her warmth was far reaching and she showed kindness and compassion for all that she touched.
Karen is survived by her four children, Richard (William) Emerson, Donovan (Joseph) Emerson, Anna (Marie) Emerson, and Amy (Lune) Axelsen. She also leaves behind her three beloved grandchildren, Daylan (Cosmo) Axelsen, Isabelle (Moon) Axelsen, and Christopher (William) Emerson; as well as two brothers, four sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Karen’s honor on Wednesday, March 29th at 11am at St. Matthew’s Catholic Parish, with luncheon to follow.
