STANFORD - Lester Wayne "Swede" Herbold, 84, a Navy veteran and retired Montana Highway Department employee, died Monday at his home in Stanford.

His memorial service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Creel Funeral Chapel, followed by burial with military honors in Lewistown City Cemetery.

Lester was born Sept. 26, 1926 in Benchland, Montana, to William and Mary (L'Agivine) Herbold. He graduated from Grass Range High School, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946.

On Nov. 14, 1947 in Billings, Montana, he was united in marriage to Lois Finkbeiner. She preceded him in death in 2000.

He worked for Tindall Construction as a Cat Skinner; Fergus County Road Department; and as a Section Foreman for the Montana Highway Department, from which he retired.

Swede served on the Stanford City Council, the Boy Scouts, Rod & Gun Club, was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star (50 years), VFW and American Legion.

He enjoyed coin collecting, hunting, fishing, camping and storytelling.

Survivors include a daughter, Leslie (Jim) DeWitt, of Kalispell; two sons: Dennis Herbold, of Stanford, and Joe (Charlotte) Herbold, of Jordan; five grandchildren: Heidi (Kevin) Rendina and Cassandra DeWitt, both of Kalispell, Charity DeWitt, of Somers, and Hayley Herbold and Heath Herbold, both of Jordan; three great-grandchildren: Brendan, Brianna and Jake Rendina; five sisters: Billie (Jerry) Bonner, Bebe Swan and June O'Connor, all of Eureka, Karen Emerson, of Kalispell and Janet (Gary) Rose, both of Kalispell; two brothers: Mervin (Bonnie) Herbold, of Kalispell and Richard Herbold, of Olney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Lois, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joan; brothers: Bill, Leonard and Jack; and his parents.
