Joseph was born Johann Joseph (went by Joseph) Alexander Walk. He was the third of thirteen known children of Martin Walk Jr. (1737-1791) and Elisabeth (Liesel) Fiscus Walk (1750-1825), who married 22 Nov 1767 at Salem, Surry (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Joseph was born at and spent his entire life in or near the Moravian community of Friedberg, then on the border of Stokes and Rowan Counties, North Carolina; now on the border of Forsyth and Davidson Counties, North Carolina.

Joseph married Elisabeth Goss (1783-1854) on 14 Apr 1803 at Friedberg, Davidson County, North Carolina. Joseph and Elisabeth were the parents of twelve known children, ten girls and two boys. Ten of the twelve children lived to maturity. The twelve children were namely:

1. Sarah Walk (1804-1848)
2. Charles Christian Walk (1805-1873)
3. Anna Susannah Walk Hege (1807-1829)
4. Louisa Catherine Walk Butner (1809-1865)
5. Maria Christiana Walk Disher (1812-1839)
6. John Joseph Walk (1814-1874)
7. Pauline Rebecca Walk Davis (1816-1845)
8. Eleonora Elizabeth Walk Foltz (1818-1839)
9. Christina Charlotte Walk Smith (1821-1902)
10. Belinda Walk Rominger (1823-1900)
11. Levinia Walk (1826-1826)
12. Lisette Henriette Walk Shore (1827-1889)

The twelfth, missing, child of Joseph Walk is Pauline Rebecca Walk (1816-1845), who married Alexander Davis on 02 Feb 1845 at Davidson County, North Carolina. It is not known where Paulina is buried.
