Mr. Archibald D. Abel was born in Pulaski County, KY 31 March 1844 to Thomas Abel b. 5 Nov 1823 from North Carolina. Archibald was raised in Missouri and came to Jefferson Township, Jackson Co. KS with his parents around 1864. He acquired a very good education in the common schools and during the second year of the Civil War, when a youth of 18 yrs, enlisted in the (Union) 18th Missouri Infantry, Company K, and served until its close. He participated in the battle of Pittsburg Landing and in all the battles of the Atlanta campaign. He also accompanied Sherman on the famous ‘march to the sea' and later was at the Grand Review in Washington, after which he received his honorable discharge 18 July 1865, being mustered out with the rank of Corporal.
Cynthia H. McComas and Archibald D. Abel removed immediately after the wedding to a farm, which they owned and occupied. They labored with a mutual purpose of building up a comfortable home, and prospered. The farm property of the union embraced 234 acres in Jefferson Township, besides an additional 160 acres in Gove County. Eight children were born to Cynthia H. McComas and Archibald Abel. Louarie, Ella who became a proficient music teacher and married Henry Elliott of Jefferson Township, Thomas a schoolteacher, Sanders L., Millie, Nannie and Jesse, David S. their 2nd child died when only two years 10 mos old. Cynthia McComas and Archibald Abel were favorably known to the citizens of the region, prominently connected with the First Baptist Church at Holton KS. Mr. Abel officiated as a Trustee and takes an active part in church work. He was politically with the Republican party and served as Township Trustee for two years. His farming operations were carried on ‘in that systematic manner which seldom fails of success.'

Mrs. Abel was first stricken with paralysis about four years ago and gradually failed until about four weeks ago when she was taken more severely and suffered most intensely until death. She moved from Missouri to Jackson county, Kansas in 1856, where she resided until death. She was married to Arch D. Abel, October 24, 1867. To this union were born eight children, -- five girls and three boys, one of the boys having died at the age of 2 years, and 10 months. Two half-sisters, a brother, seven children and a companion to mourn their loss. Mrs. Abel became a christian in her youth and joined the M. E. church of which she was a member at her death. She will be missed as a loving companion, a dutiful mother and a kind neighbor.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. E. L. Geyer, from the M. E. church. The people expressed their sympathy by the large attendance. The remains were interred in the Circleville cemetery to await the resurrection mourn(sic).

After leaving the army Mr. Abel came to Kansas and settled in Jackson county. It was here he met Miss Cynthia McComas and their friendship resulted in a marriage October 24, 1867. Eight children were born to Mr and Mrs Abel, one a son dying in infancy, the others are: Mrs. L. M. Bidwell, Mrs. Ella Elliott, Mrs. Mildred Day of Holton, Mrs. Nannie E. Askren of Manhattan, T. J. of Onaga, Sanders Leroy of Circleville, and Jessie who is at home. Thirteen grandchildren and two brothers, S. L. and Alvin Abel of Holton, who are left to mourn his death. All these relatives were present at the funeral. In 1895 Mr. Abel was elected county treasurer of this county and served two terms in a very proficient manner, returning to the farm after his official work was over. On January 29, 1905, Mrs. Abel was called from the home and since then Mr. Abel has failed in health until death claimed him on May 2.
He was a member of the First Baptist church and the funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Rev. Blackledge of Holton. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and services at the grave were in charge of this order. He was a member of the G. A. R.
