Ted was the youngest of 12 children born to Peter and Lydia Hennager Salmond. When he was 8 years old, they moved from Badger, Minnesota to a Homestead in the Verndale district of Saskatchewan. They were farmers, cattlemen, and Ted loved his horses-a common trait of all the Salmond's. They enjoyed many hours on the shores of Lake Lenore. In 1928, he married Dorothy Nie. When farming failed on the prairies, they moved with their two children, Jimmy and Evelyn to Grimsby, Ontario, where he and other members of the Nie family got factory jobs with Hamilton Steel, and later did Construction work. On retirement, Ted and Dorothy moved to their "Rock of Paradise" home in the Kawartha Lakes area.
