Roy Johns, 99-year-old resident of the United Methodist home in Enid and former Quinlan and Mooreland resident, died Saturday, February 22, 2003 in Enid. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, in Quinlan, Oklahoma United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lesly Broadbent officiating.
Burial was in the Union Cemetery under direction of Billings Funeral Home.
Roy Johns was born July 28, 1903, in Phillips, Price County, Wisconsin, the son of Ed and Emma (Anthony) Johns. At a young age his family moved to Clay Center, Kansas area. In 1909, Roy's mother, his four brothers and one sister came by train to Quinlan, Oklahoma. The traveled by wagon to a farm 10 miles southeast of Quinlan, joining his father who had made the trip earlier.
Roy attended Mayfield school. After school he worked on the family farm. On May 20, 1925, he was married to Laverne Bradshaw in Taloga, Oklahoma. To the union three children were born, Marvin, Betty Jo and Don. They made their home in the Quinlan area.
In 1941 Roy purchased what was to became their family farm seven miles north of Quinlan. Roy and Laverne retired in 1973 and moved into Mooreland. After his retirement, Roy enjoyed woodworking and traveling. Roy and Laverne visited nearly every state While they were traveling. Roy also enjoyed hunting for arrowheads.
Laverne preceded hin in death on July 26, 1992. Roy moved to the Greenbriar Assisted Living Center in Enid in 1998 and in the latter part of 2002, he moved into the United Methodist Home in Enid, Oklahoma.
Roy was a longtime member of the Quinlan United Methodist Church. He had served in many capacities of the church and was very involved in building the church. he enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren. In 2002, the family celebrated Roy's 99th birthday and he enjoyed being with his family and many friends on the special day.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jo DeBock and husband, Howard, of Quinlan, Oklahoma; two sons Marvin Johns and wife, Ruth, of Shell, Missouri and Don Johns and wife, Colette, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one brother, Walter Johns of Hutchinson, Kansas; six grandchildren, Terry and Kathy DeBock, Ann and Dean Goll, Gayla and Evert Walton, Mike and Mary Johns, D'Anne and Scott Stites and Leah Johns; 11 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Ray; two sisters, Viola and Ruby, and brothers, Howard, Harvey, Art and an infant brother.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Quinlan United Methodist Church with the funeral home as custodian.
