OBITUARY--ARTHUR RAYMOND JOHNS
Arthur Raymond Johns, more affectionately know as "Art" or "Uncle Art" by his nieces and nephews, was born in Longford, Kansas, February 20, 1900, to Ed and Emma Anthony Johns. At a very young age he moved to Phillips, Price County, Wisconsin, where his father worked in the lumber business.
After three years they moved back to Longford where he attended Walker School in Clay County.
At the age of nine years he moved with his family members by train to Quinlan and settled in the Mayfield-Garvie community where they purchased a farm and ran the Driscol Post Office in their home.
At an early age he entered the military service, serving in the cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas, two years and transferred to the Army Air Corp four years, working with the ground crew while stationed in Hawaii.
After his discharge, he and a relative bought and operated a service station in Mooreland, Oklahoma for a short time.
Art gave his heart to the Lord in the late 30's and became a member of the Assembly of God Church. He played the saxophone regularly while attending the Mayfield Assembly Church in Oklahoma.
The rest of his laboring years were spent on the family farm, milking lots of cows, tilling the soil and caring for his aging parents until their deaths.
In 1980 he retired and move with his sister, Ruby to Mooreland, Oklahoma.
His faithfulness to Sunday worship service continued to the end, always seeing that his sisters got to church.
He passed away after a two month illness on February 29, 1992, at the age of 92 years and nine days.
Survivors are his sister, Viola Hopkins, Mooreland, Oklahoma, and two brothers, Roy and wife, Laverne, Mooreland, Oklahoma, and Walter and wife, Ruth, Hutchinson, Kansas; 15 nieces and nephews and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Nellie Emrich and Ruby Johns, and four brothers, Howard, Harvey, Ray, and Johnny.
Services were in the Assembly of God Church at Mooreland, Oklahoma on March 3, 1992 at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Officiating was Revend Gary Mitchell.
Music was by Ruth Johns.
Pallbearers were nephews; Wesley Bird, Marvin Johns, Melvin Bird, Elvin Johns, Sonny Johns, Blackie Johns, Max Johns, Wayneard Hopkins and Donald Johns.
Interment was in the Union Cemetery south of Quinlan, Woodward County, Oklahoma.
Services by Billings Funeral Home.
