DEATH SUMMONS HEAD OF MOTOR TRUCK COMPANY
Robert W. Mackie, President of Oshkosh Manufacturing Concern, Passes Away. Funeral is Friday
Robert W. Mackie, president of Oshkosh Motor Trucks, Inc., died this morning at 10:30 at his home 49 Park street, after a short illness. He was nearly 81.
He was a life-long resident of Winnebago county, and a prominent farmer and business man.
Several years ago he became affiliated with the Oshkosh Four-Wheel Drive company, now Oshkosh Motor Trucks, Inc., and a year ago became the company's president.
Formerly Mr. Mackie owned and operated the Mackie & Kossel threshing machine plant. Also he formerly was a director of the State Bank of Oshkosh on the south side, part of the merged institution under the name of Security bank.
Mr. Mackie was born Aug. 19, 1851, in the town of Nekimi. His parents were William and Margaret Webster Mackie, both natives of Scotland. Mr, Mackie was the sixth of 11 children.
He spent his early life in the township and remained there until he was 28. On March 3, 1880, he married Miss Margaret Jones. In 1886 he purchased his own land, the old Clark farm of 160 acres in ther town of Utica, where he lived until 1913. Mrs. Mackie died a year ago.
Ambitious and an energetic leader, Mr. Mackie took the lead in his community of farmers, and although not a politician frequently was called upon to serve in office. As a resident of the town of Utica he was chairman of the town board and a member of the district school board, a position he held until his appointmnt to a state commission having in charge the building of the agricultural and domestic science school established at Wnneconne.
He formed the Utica Telephone company and operated this service for farmers for 25 years.
In 1913 he moved to Oshkosh. Mr. Mackie reorganized the Davis Threshing Machine company, which later was dissolved. Up to the time of his death he continued as president of the Utica Telephone company.
He was an acrive member of Plymouth Congregational church and a church trustee.
Mr. Mackie is survived by all his children, five sons and four daughters. They are Samuel G. Mackie of Beloit, Edward E. and Milton E. of Pickett, W. T. Mackie of Chicago, Robert E. Mackie of Oshkosh, Mrs. C. A. Fuller of Menomonie, Wis., Mrs. C. A. Peterson of Rosendale and Misses Margaret and Lola Mackie, both of Oshkosh. There 15 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Rosa Marshall, Tacoma, Wash.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Plymouth Congregational church, with burial taking place at Lakeview Memorial park. Rev. J. B. Neff, former Elo pastor, will be in charge.
