Mary was born October 4, 1863, in Lewistown a daughter of David and Harriet Stull Shankle and was the wife of Cornelius "Isaac" Rice of Mountaindale.

She was a member of the Dunkard Brethren Church.

She was the mother of the following children, Keefer Cornelius Rice and wife Blanche, Leavie Elgia Whipp and husband Franklin Keefer, Grace Elizabeth Eaton and husband Samuel Coleman, Annie Sophia Eyler and husband Charles Grayson, Rueyann "Ruie" Stull Pearl, Jennie Irene Wachter and husband Millard, Susie Frances Hewitt and husband Alonzo William, Silas Pirson Rice and wife Lillie Mae. She was predeceased by a son Franklin Elmer Rice and Two daughters, Sadie Catherine Shankle and Rosa B. Rice and an unknown infant.

Mary was a sister to the following siblings, Elizabeth Ann Catherine Shankle, Mary Jane Shankle, John D. Shankle, Susan E. Shankle, Dennis J. Shankle, Sarah E. Shankle, Ida May Shankle, and Howard L.Shankle.
