The seventh of eight children, Emma was born in St Andrews, Holborn in West London to George Edward Wilkerson and his wife Margaret Miles. Her father died when she was 8.
Emma married Joseph Sperry in the parish church of St Andrew, Holborn, on 19 May 1872. In Jan 1878, when Joseph's mother died, the young couple lived on Grasp Ann Road in Holborn. In 1879, their daughter Helena Maud (aka Eleanor) died. Two years later, the couple made plans to emigrate to America. Emma's mother declined the trip, living in Holborn, Middlesex, until she died in 1883.
Joseph left England and his young family by way of Liverpool to New York on the SS Egypt on 30 May 1881, and made a new home for them in Philadelphia. Emma followed with their six children on 9 Sep 1881, from London to New York on the ship Bolivia.
The family made their home in Philadelphia: at 1015 Olive Street in 1882, 1009 Tasker in 1885, 643 Reed in 1890, and added five more children to their brood. They continued to move around: 1439 S 5th in 1900, 633 Morris in 1905, 2544 N 7th in 1909, 2834 N 7th in 1911, 3732 10th in 1920.
After Joseph died, Emma lived with her daughter Alice Bauer and granddaughter Elva Salmensen's young family in 1930.
Emma last resided at the Nazarene Home for the Aged. She lived 82 years. Emma was buried in Hillside Cemetery, joining her husband.
