Fred was the eighth of twelve children born to Joseph George Sperry and his wife Emma Wilkinson, immigrants from London, England. Fred was the first of their children to be born in America. His older siblings were Joseph George, Emma Frances, Alice Louisa, Helena Maud, Albert William, Arthur Herbert, and Henry Charles. His younger siblings were Walter Edward, William, Mabel Gertrude, and Frank Percival.

Fred married Anna Marie Martsch, another first-born in America, and daughter of German immigrants. Together, they had one daughter Marie. After she died tragically before her 29th birthday, Fred never set foot in a church again.

Frederick H Sperry worked 50 years for the old Philadelphia Record before joining The Bulletin in 1947. He retired as a pressman in the color press department of The Bulletin in 1947. He was 80 when he died at his home on Daly Street. He was survived by his wife, 2 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers.
