Emma Frances was born to Joseph George Sperry and his wife Emma Wilkinson and baptized in St James Clerkenwell Parish, Islington, Middlesex. The family emigrated to New York in 1881 and settled in Philadelphia.

In 1898, Emma married John Schell. In 1900, the young couple lived at 526 Wilder in the 1st Ward. They had a son Harold John in 1903, and the family lived together at 642 West Cambria Street for many years. Emma lost her husband in 1929, her father the next year, and her mother in 1933. Still on West Cambria Street, Emma lived with her son Harold and his wife Hazel in the 1940s.

Emma lived 83 years and died from respiratory failure due to metastatic carcinoma of the cervix and uterus.
