He was born in Clay County, the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Hicks Sampson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had taught music throughout West Central West Virginia. He was a retired farmer and a Baptist. He and his wife founded and built Community Christ Church, Shock.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Callie Duncan, Hallie Rider, Lougene Knopp and Ocie King; two brothers, Harvey Sampson and Clyde Sampson; three half sisters, Luverne White, Lyda Tanner and Josie Murphy; and two half-Brothers, Andy Sampson and Bill Sampson.
Services were held at Rosedale United Methodist Church, Rosedale, with Rev. Dewey Tanner officiating. Burial was in Rosedale Cemetery.
