Garrettsville man killed by train; suicide ruled.

An engineer on a southbound Erie-Lackawanna freight train said he blew the horn and hit the brakes, then watched in horror as a 52-year-old Garrettsville man lay down on the tracks Thursday.

Killed by the train was Clyde W. Sampson of 10414 South St.

Sampson, who was released from Woodside Receiving Hospital in Youngstown two weeks ago, was struck by the Cleveland-bound train at 7:05 a.m. near the Windham-Parkman crossing in Windham Twp.

He was pronounced dead at Robinson Memorial Hospital at 9:38 a.m. by Coroner Robert A. Sybert, who ruled the death a suicide.

Sampson moved to Garrettsville eight years ago from Grantsville, WV., where he was born Jan. 6, 1921.

He is survived by five sons, Burton of Newbury, Jim Lee of Leavittsburg, Ford, Ricky, and James Harold of Grantsville,WV; four daughters, Mrs. Katherine Carter and Mrs. Shirley Jo Cottrill, both of Warren and Linda Sampson and Betsy Sampson, both of Grantsville, WV; four brothers and three sisters, all of WV; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mallory Memorial Home in Garrettsville, with burial in Park Cemetary, Garrettsville. Calling hours will be Friday and Saturday evening from 7-9.
