He was the son of Heman Hurlburt [1773-1863] and Hannah Mosher (Moosier)[1780-1857], descendants of United Empire Loyalists. He was one of sixteen children. Four of his brothers were also Wesleyan Methodist preachers. He married Catherine M Lawrence in 1830, Augusta Twp Grenville, Ontario. They had at least nine children.
