Thomas is a UEL descendant. The fourth son of Heman Hurlburt (1773-1853) and Hannah Moshier (1780-1857), who had 11 sons and five daughters. Of the sons, five of them became ministers, three - lawyers, two - tanners, and one died in
youth.

Married first, July 5, 1832, to Betsy Almira Adams (1815-1863). They had 10 children - refer to spouse's memorial for details. After her death, he married Roxanne (Kilborn) Wood (1814-1899) on Jan. 12, 1865.

Timeline
1828 - sent as a teacher to an Indian school, Muncey Mission, Caradoc township; built first mission house there; built congregation from 15 to 85 members; his father-in-law became
his superintendent here

1834 - sent as a missionary to Saugeen Mission on Lake Huron, where he remained for two years

1835 - ordained as a priest

1837 - transferred to St. Clair and Walpole Island, where he remained for a year

1838 - posted to Pic Mission on the north shore of Lake Superior, where he stayed for three years and studied the Ojibwa language

1839 - worked at Ft. William, taught children, preached to natives

1841 - sent to Norway House on Hudson's Bay - stayed two years in this area, during which time wife Betsy returned south (1842) for health reasons

1843 - returned east to Lake Simcoe, Ontario and stayed one year

1844 - moved to the US as a presiding elder in the Indian Mission Conference (Texas to Missouri); stayed for 6 years

1851 - returned to Canada; three years in Alderville and Rice Lake, Ontario

1854 - returned to Norway House and stayed for three years;
superintendent at Rossville Mission

1855 - Betsy suffers greatly from a fall

1858 - moved to St. Clair, Sarnia, Ontario - six years

1863 - wife Betsy Almira died in Toronto

1865 - married Roxanna (Kilborn) Wood

1871 - moved to Little Current, Manitoulin Island

1873 - in March, he fell on ice near home, resulting in concussion and stroke, and succumbed to this fall on Apr. 14, 1873

Gravesite Details

According to family tree information, he was buried in June 1874; I am not sure how this could have occurred over a year after his death unless he was moved from Little Current to another location; the burial location is not currently known.
