William Ross was born to Joseph Harve Ross and Nancy Williams according to the 1810 census in Nelson Co., KY abt. 1795. William signed up as a private in Captain William Keller's Company, 2nd Regiment, Mounted Militia. He also served with another private that the Ross family was acquainted with; John Ashby - son to John Jack Rufus Ashby. Recent information has come to light that William Ross moved to Spencer County, Indiana where his brother's Thomas and Evan also lived. It is possible that Stephen D. Ashby also lived there as he received a ferry license in 1838 in Spencer County.
William Ross was married and can be found on the 1820 census records in Spencer County, Indiana. He was a clerk for the 1814 and 1817 elections in Spencer - so it is presumed that he had moved there after the 1812 war. William was Justice of Peace for Spencer County in 1814, 1816 and 1823. He lived near the well known John Stutteville who was an early settler of Spencer County, Indiana.
William had several children; one son was Patrick Henry Ross born in 1829. William Ross may have died sometime before his sons were born as his wife Margaret (Turpin) Ross can be found on an 1830 census in Spencer, Indiana without her husband. Margaret remarries Daniel Dennis Iglehart.
