James Coleman Ross was born to Joseph Harve Ross and Nancy Williams Ross 1784 in Virginia (either Campbell or Nelson Co., KY in 1792) according to an 1850 census record in Kenton, KY. James was the first born son and probably named after his grandfather James Ross. James C. Ross first married Mary Polly Cotton Nov. 10, 1808 in Nelson Co., KY. They appear to have had at least 8 children with the first born son Joseph Washington Ross named after his father Joseph. There may have been more than 8 children, but census records are missing from 1820 and 1830. When James Ross' wife Polly Cotton Ross died about 1835, probably in Hardin, KY; he then married Nancy (Ross) about 1842. James and Nancy Ross appear to have run a hotel in Walton, Boone, KY. According to info online, they may have also managed a hotel in Kenton, KY as well. James Coleman Ross appears to have passed away some time after the 1860 census in Walton, Boone, KY or in Missouri.
