George Elder immigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1817 on the ship "Peace." They left from Pollokshaws, a suburb of Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Scotland. It took almost ten weeks to get to Montreal. They left before March 7th, the day his last child, Margaret was born. His wife, Christian, came later with her seven children. Margaret the baby was two years old before she met her father.

George Elder Senior, native [Melissa Moore changed the word "lately" to "native" to match the other church record] of Pittenweem, County of Fife - but when deceased of the Township of Hinchinbrook, aged about sixty eight years, died on the eleventh day of June and was buried on the thirteenth day of June, in Scotch Church Burying Ground, Huntingdon - In the presence of the undersigned - one thousand eight hundred and forty eight. Signed - Alexander Wallace
(Minister), Jesse Hayter, and James Lunan.

Personal note by Donald M. Elder (1999): At this time there are no grave markers left to identify the "Scotch Church Burying Grounds" but this area is along side of the Chateauguay river, behind the Braithwaite building and the Masonic Hall. At some time, and for some reason, someone or some group decided that the graves and markers should be moved. This was done, and everything was supposed to end up in the Huntingdon Cemetery which is on F. Cleyn Street. I have never been able to find George's grave stone.
