George Elder was the eldest son of George Elder and Christian Hosie. Born in Scotland he immigrated with his family to Canada and when he became a young man he married another immigrant to Canada, Barbara Smith on Jan 3, 1833 in Huntingdon. George was 28 and Barbara was 22. To this union, eleven children were born: Euphemia, Margaret, James Whyte, Christina, George, Mary Ann, Peter S., Barbara, John Smith, Jane and Janet. It was a lively household with many family and friends around. George died in Huntingdon on Aug. 29, 1881 at the age of 77.
