Odessa "Odessie" King Wood was born September 25, 1919 to Lawrence Adams King and Addie Collins King in Thomasville, Davidson County, North Carolina. She had two siblings. Odessie married Lonnie Lee Wood on April 14, 1934 in Greensville County, Virginia. She and her husband lied about their ages in order to marry. (He was really 18, and she was 14.) The couple had two children: a daughter and a son, Robert Lee "Joe" Wood.
Odessie passed away on May 25, 1988 in Roanoke Rapids, Halifax County, North Carolina at age 68. Her husband passed away the next year, and they are buried near each other in Cedarwood Cemetery in Halifax County.
