James was the son of Marshall and Hannah Wantland Galloway and the husband of Seraphine (Sarah) Barnes Galloway. James was a farmer and a workman in iron and stone. James and his brother, Thomas, are said to have served in the Tennessee militia in the war of 1812. James and Sarah had seven sons, James H., John M., Thomas J., Ben F., George W., and Nathan L.) and four daughters, Amanda M.(married W.M. Spurgeon), Eliza E. (married A.H. Beard), Jane (maried J. Crouch), Sarah (married J.R. Smith)and Mary (married Rev. Wm A. Keen).
