His pension application (#S38718) for his service during the revolutionary war was filed in Sullivan Co., Tn. on 11 Nov 1825 and approved and a certificate issued 23 Mar 1826 by the United States. He enlisted in the Continental Army, 3rd Maryland Militia. National Archives records show his unit participated in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Cowpens, Guliford and numerous other skirmishes. He was discharged at Annapolis, Md. (His record of service is on file with the DAR & SAR).
After his discharge from service Marshall married Hannah Wantland (name sometimes spelled Watlin, etc.) and lived briefly in Maryland, moving from there to Virginia where most of his children were born, then moving to Sullivan Co., Tn. (probably between 1795 and 1803) where he spent the later years of his life. Marshall and Hannah's farm is believed to have been about 6 miles southwest of Blountville, TN. Marshall and Hannah had at least five sons (Thomas, John, James, William and Abraham) and several daughters who survived to adulthood.
