William was the son of Marshall and Hannah Wantland Galloway and the husband of Sophia Cox Galloway whom he married about 1829 in Tennessee. He moved his family from Tennessee to Arkansas about 1850 settling on land which later became the community of Shover Springs. William's father, Marshall served in the American Colonial Army from 1777 to 1783 during the American Revolution. William and Sophia's nine children, all born in Tennessee, knew Hempstead County Arkansas as their home. They were: Abraham (wife Sarah Polk), Eliza (husband John Albert), Thomas (wife Mary Rothwell), Annis Mae (husbands 1-Waller Rothwell, 2-John Ross), John (wife Mary Mouser, James (wife Elizabeth Mouser), Sarah (husband Mastin Sutton), Mary and Jabe F. (wife Amanda Fuller). William's grave at Shover Springs Cemetery is unmarked.
