James Crawford, 88, lifelong area resident
Craigmont – James W. Crawford, 88, a longtime Craigmont area resident, died early Monday at the Boise Veterans Administration Hospital of cancer. He had been a patient there since December.
Crawford was born March 25, 1895, at Juliaetta, the son of Samuel and Malinda Crawford. The family moved a year later to a homestead near Fletcher northeast of Craigmont.
He worked for the railroad as a young man, then at the Craig Mountain Lumber Co. at Winchester for several years and retired in 1958 from the union Warehouse at Craigmont.
He and Edith Stephens were married Oct. 12, 1929, at Lewiston. She died Feb. 20, 1965.
Crawford was a member of the Church of Christ and the Craigmont post of the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War I and an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include three sisters, Mabel Wamsley of Craigmont and Jessie Kelley and Lillie Stephens, both of Lewiston, and a brother, Samuel Edward Crawford of Lewiston. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
The funeral will be held at 2 pm Thursday at Uhlorn Funeral Chapel at Craigmont with the Rev. Paul H. Kimmel of the Craigmont United Church officiating. A military graveside service will be conducted at 4:15 pm Thursday at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens at Lewiston by the Craigmont American Legion.
