Mitchell Mayfield was at birth named Joe Hobson Mayfield, according to his sister, Marvella Mayfield Overby. But in adulthood, he always used the name Mitchell of Mitch Mayfield.
He was one of 13 children born to George Alexander (Sandy) Mayfield and Rebecca Ann Crosby Mayfield.
Mitch served in WWI. He married Callie M. Lyles about 1919 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish. Before the 1930 census they adopted a son, Harry L. Mayfield.
