Mary Catherine (Cuppy) Long, daughter of Adam and Christina Cuppy, was born at Lafayette, Indiana Dec 25, 1832, removing at an early age with her parents to Beardstown, Ill.

At the age of eight years she removed with her parents to about 1 mile south of Ottumwa and three or four miles north of the Indian agency of Sacs & Foxes and on the DesMoines river. Shortly after the arrival of the family, the territory was purchased of the Indians.

Here she attained womanhood and was united in marriage with A.B. Long March 21, 1850. Mr. and Mrs. Long started a small store on the Mormon trail near Blakesburg where they were successful.

After a time they put up a brick store building in Blakesburg. She helped her husband in his business until spring 1862 when the family came to this county and settled on their farm near Leon.

In December 1868 they moved to Leon and engaged in mercantile business until 1875 when they again moved to the farm, returning to Leon in the fall 1882 where they have lived until the present time.

To her 8 sons have been born. The 1st and 3rd died at a very early age. Remaining 6 have attained manhood.
