Horry L. Long was born at Blakesburg, Iowa, July 15, 1859, the third son of Aaron B. and Mary Catherine Long. At the age of three, his family moved to a farm three miles east of Leon. He attended country school and then Leon High School, graduating in a class of four with Stephen Varga, Morris Gardner and John Plumwell.
He, at an early age, worked with his father and other firms in the retail business in Leon. He was later in business for himself for many years.
He was a member of the Masonic Fraternal Chapter and Commandery, being a past commander. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, White Shrine and Shrine. In his younger days, he was active musically in church work, having sung in the choir for more than 20 years. He was a good man and gentleman, favoring a high standard of morality, having maintained an unassailable character through a long and useful life. He passed away at the Decatur County Hospital, February 11, 1937.
Funeral services were held at the Stewart Funeral Home on Sunday, February 14, 1937, conducted by Rev. A.V. Hart and Masonic Service in charge of Grand River Lodge #78, AF & AM. Interment was in Leon Cemetery. (The Leon Journal Reporter, Leon, Iowa)
