Dowain Franklin Long was born on December 13, 1855 at Blakesburg, Wapello county, Iowa, the fourth son of Aaron B. and Mary Catherine Cuppy Long. He departed this life July 20, 1938, at 10 o'clock a.m., at his home, Fran Kanna farm five miles northeast of Leon, Iowa, at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 7 days.
The family was engaged in the mercantile business at Blakesburg until 1861, when they moved to Decatur county, settling on land about four miles northeast of Leon which Aaron B. Long had entered from the government. There were eight boys in the famly, two of whom died in infancy. In addition to these boys their mother took an orphan girl, Carrie Letner, to rear. The father engaged in the mercantile business in Leon soon after moving to Decatur county and some of the boys grew up to become farmers, and some to become merchants.
Frank, as he was known by his acquaintances, attended the Leon high school, graduating in the class of 1875. He taught school four terms in South Dakota and took a claim 4-1/2 miles south of Canova in McCook county. Then he came back to take charge of his father's farm. Later he improved the north side of the farm where he resided until his death.
On October 21, 1886, he was married to Miss Anna D. Jackson and they made their home on the farm northeast of Leon. Three children were born to this marriage: one son, Clair C. Long of Martin, S.D., and two daughters, Alpha, now Mrs. W.C. Surber of Johnston, Iowa, and Eunice, now Mrs. Raymond J. Boyd of Granger, Iowa.
Three brothers, John, Albert and Horry, have preceded him in death, and two brothers, Orison S. Long of Shenandoah, Iowa and Granville A. Long of Leon, survive him as do his eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held at the Stewart Funeral Home on Saturday, July 23, with Albert V. Hart, pastor of the Leon Christian church officiating. F.A. Garber and A.L. Sears spoke briefly of Mr. Long as they had known him in the community and in the church.
Music was furnished by a quartet from the Christian church and two solos by Harold T. Landeryou. Interment was in the Leon cemetery.
